About Simply Singing
The Simply Singing Story
Simply Singing was founded in September 2024 out of a love for music, a passion for community focus, and a mission to be inclusive.
The founder, Simon Percy is a local musician who created this welcoming space in North Lincolnshire to bring people together through the joy of music.
Singing makes you feel better, reduce stress and relax
Many many people who sing regularly, and sing in choirs will tell you how great it makes them feel. Have a go with Simply Singing and experience the joy of singing - You'll be glad you did!
People say singing is uplifting and joyful. They feel positive during the singing session, and the positive mood continues afterwards. Singing can help if you feel depressed, stressed or anxious by lifting your mood.
Regular group singing can make you feel less isolated and is a way of feeling part of a group. You can make new friends.
Singing helps with lung function
By learning to breathe more slowly and deeply and improving the sense of control over your breathing and improving your posture to help you breathe, singing will help you breathe a lot more easily, fully and efficiently
Singing helps to improve memory
Singing together improves memory. The way your brain associates the melody with the lyrics helps to cement those memory pathways and exercises parts of the brain that are usually not exercised very much!
Singing lets you express yourself
You don’t need any musical ability or experience to join a singing group. Some people are reluctant to give it a go because they feel they can’t sing.
But you don’t need to be an amazing singer to benefit from learning the breathing exercises, singing in a group, and meeting other people. Plus, you may find that you can sing better than you think!
At Simply Singing we focus on the song’s words and melody, that way you are not lost in the music and you think about your breathing and how to express yourself through song
Singing builds a sense of community
Since the very dawn of human existence, singing has been used to bring people together and has driven social bonding between groups of people, creating positive and joyous peace. Singing together really creates that bond and sense of community as you allow the beauty of the music and the intricacies of the lyrics to extend that feeling of togetherness as you sing in the choir. You will make new friends and any feelings of loneliness will be gone.
Meet Our Musical Director
The Musical Director and founder of Simply Singing is Simon Percy.
Simon started out on his musical journey from a very young age. He took up the trombone and the piano and had lessons in singing.
Having attained his Grade 8 (ABRSM) on the trombone, piano, singing and theory of music, Simon went on to obtain a degree in music from the University of Reading.
His first career choice saw him enter the teaching profession as a classroom teacher, starting in the primary sector and then moving into the secondary sector.
It soon became apparent to Simon that his passion for music lay in performing and taking part because he wanted to, because he loved what he was doing, and not because it was something he had to do in order to earn a living.
Therefore, Simon left the teaching profession and worked in an area of employment which did not involve music at all.
This meant that he could enjoy his music when and how he wanted to.
Simon has played in the "pit orchestra" for many local Musical Theatre Groups, both on the trombone and on the keyboard.
Approximately 25 years ago, Simon began his journey as Musical Director for what was then called Barton and District Amateur Operatic Society. This has since been renamed Barton Musical Theatre Society.
Having found his niche, Simon has developed as Musical Director and is now the Musical Director of 4 Musical Theatre groups. Those being -
Curtain Up Productions (Grimsby) - (CUP)
Gainsborough Musical Theatre Society (GMTS)
Louth Playgoers (Louth)
Scunthorpe Musical Theatre Society (SMTS)
With his dynamic, encouraging and supportive style, Simon has brought the best out of the singers and musicians as they perform their parts.
As well as musical theatre, Simon often helps out local brass and wind bands in and around the wider area and has competed in the Brass Band Regional and National Championships from the 4th to the Championship Sections.
He has also played on the QE2 in Dubai for the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations and has marched with the Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Band at the Remembrance Day parade at the Menin Gate in Belgium.
Simon is a very encouraging, skilled and accomplished Musical Director and musician who will bring out the best in everyone he works with.
